This is the story of teenage illegal migrant girl Ademoka who lives in Kazakhstan and is forced to be a beggar to survive. But at the same time she’s bright and talented and dreams of studying all the time. Her illegal status and lack of citizenship is a serious obstacle to this. At some point Ademoka gets a chance to receive an education, and help comes from an unexpected source. The person least believable as being supportive, the alcoholic loser Ahab, offers a helping hand…
Adilkhan Yerzhanov
Kazakh film director and scriptwriter, born in 1982. He graduated in film directing from the Kazakh National Academy of Arts (in 2009) and afterwards in New York. He is a member of the European Film Academy and the APSA Academy. His films are internationally recognised – “The Owners” (2014) premiered at the Cannes festival and won the Free Spirit Award at the 30th Warsaw Film Festival, “The Plague at the Karatas Village” (2016) won the NETPAC Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival and was screened in the Free Spirit Competition at the 32nd WFF, “The Gentle Indifference of the World” (2018) was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes and in the Discoveries section at the 34th WFF, and “Atbay’s Fight” (2019) was in the WFF’s International Competition. In 2020 “Yellow Cat” premiered at the Venice festival and was shown in San Sebastian and at the 36th WFF. In 2022 his film “Goliath” had its world premiere at the Venice festival. “Ademoka’s Education” is his latest film.
